Underwater Metal Detector Searches
I conduct professional underwater searches using metal detectors. Underwater, I search for, among other things, lost property, physical evidence, and archaeological artifacts. I have many years of experience in conducting searches both on land and underwater. I cooperate with institutions and historical associations, and I carry out commissioned searches for law enforcement agencies and private individuals.
KEY FACTORS AFFECTING EFFECTIVE UNDERWATER METAL DETECTION
Underwater metal detecting is significantly more difficult than searching on land. Choosing the right underwater metal detector largely determines the effectiveness of the search. The efficiency and safety of operations are influenced by factors such as:
- water pollution level
- seabed contamination level
- type of bottom and mineralization
- water temperature (affecting both device performance and diver hypothermia)
- presence of currents
- wave activity
- water salinity
- speed of sound propagation underwater (affects interference from swimmers, people on shore, or motorboats; bubbles from diving regulators also impact signal audibility)
- water depth, which must not exceed the manufacturer’s waterproof rating of the device
- limited search time due to breathing gas supply
- limited dive time due to nitrogen or inert gas saturation requiring decompression
- maintaining excellent buoyancy
- use of additional accessories such as sieves, nets, containers, and grids
- marking underwater search sectors and applying proper search patterns
- reduced diving safety caused by disturbed sediments, which decrease visibility and may interfere with detectors used by dive partners; this requires maintaining distance and may lead to team separation, increasing risk in emergency situations
WHAT IS THE BEST UNDERWATER METAL DETECTOR?
Choosing the right detector directly affects search effectiveness and return on investment. Many manufacturers offer suitable equipment. Some of the most popular underwater detectors and pinpointers include: Minelab Excalibur II, Nokta PulseDive, Quest Scuba Tector, Fisher SAR-1, Garrett AT, XP Deus II, Garrett ATX, Garrett Sea Hunter Mark II, Makro Multi Kruzer, Fisher Pulse 8X.

WHAT IS THE WATERPROOF RATING OF AN UNDERWATER METAL DETECTOR?
The maximum waterproof rating of the detector—and thus the maximum depth at which I conduct searches—is 95 meters.

CAN AN UNDERWATER METAL DETECTOR BE USED ON LAND?
Yes, absolutely. However, from my experience, it is best to use equipment specifically designed for underwater use. Manufacturers often include a long shaft for land use, but these detectors typically offer shallower detection depth and poorer ground balancing compared to devices dedicated to land environments.
LEGALITY OF OWNING A METAL DETECTOR AND CONDUCTING UNDERWATER SEARCHES
The purchase and possession of a metal detector are legal and do not require any permits. It can also be used without permission to search for lost items in water, provided they are not classified as historical artifacts—for example, submerged meteorites.
SEARCHING FOR SUNKEN TREASURES AND ARTIFACTS – LEGAL REGULATIONS
The use of metal detectors to search for submerged historical artifacts is regulated by the Polish Act of July 23, 2003 on the protection and care of monuments (Journal of Laws 2003 No. 162, item 1568).
According to Article 36(1), a permit from the provincial heritage conservator is required for:
“12) Searching for hidden or abandoned movable monuments, including archaeological artifacts, using any type of electronic and technical devices and diving equipment.”
“2. In Polish maritime areas, permits for activities referred to in paragraph 1 points 5 and 12 are issued by the director of the maritime office in agreement with the provincial heritage conservator competent for the seat of that maritime office.”
WHAT ARE THE CONSEQUENCES OF CONDUCTING UNDERWATER SEARCHES WITHOUT A PERMIT?
The consequences of illegal underwater searches are defined in Article 111:
“1. Anyone who, without a permit or contrary to its conditions, searches for hidden or abandoned monuments, including using electronic or technical devices and diving equipment, shall be subject to arrest, restriction of liberty, or a fine.”
HOW MUCH DOES AN UNDERWATER METAL DETECTOR COST?
There is a wide range of equipment from various manufacturers available on the market, with different specifications and price levels. The choice of device should depend on your needs, environmental conditions, and the depth at which you intend to conduct underwater searches.
WHAT CAN YOU FIND UNDERWATER USING A METAL DETECTOR?
Almost anything. Water provides an excellent hiding place for many objects. Due to the challenging and foreign environment for humans, these areas are often unexplored for many years because of limited accessibility and lack of appropriate equipment.

- They have a short detection range
- They are used for precise detection
- They may have interchangeable tips/coils
- They can be used both on land and underwater

HOW TO START UNDERWATER METAL DETECTING?
Underwater metal detecting requires proper equipment and diving preparation. For beginners, it is recommended to first gain experience with metal detecting on land. The next step can be shallow water searching (wading), which only requires a waterproof coil.
After that, completing a basic diving course is essential, along with upgrading to a fully waterproof metal detector. Alternatively, some manufacturers offer special protective cases that shield the control panel from water, allowing operation at depths of several meters.

I conduct professional recreational diving courses that conclude with an internationally recognized certification. After completing the basic Open Water Diver (OWD) certification course, you will be qualified to perform safe dives up to a depth of 18 meters.
