Underwater Search with a Magnetometer

METHODS OF UNDERWATER DETECTION OF METALLIC OBJECTS

In practice, during underwater search operations, I use a passive method, which is based on the variations in magnetic field induction values.
In my work, I also apply the active method, which relies on the use of an intentionally generated magnetic field.
You can read more about the active search method here.

GEOPHYSICAL UNDERWATER SEARCHES

One of the methods for locating underwater objects with ferromagnetic properties is the use of a magnetometer.

HOW A MAGNETOMETER WORKS

The Earth has its own magnetic field, the strength and direction of which depend on the geographic location. Depending on the region, it ranges from 25,000 nT to about 70,000 nT.
A magnetometer is an instrument that measures this value.

Using the fact that protons exhibit precession (rotational motion) in a constant magnetic field—where the number of rotations per second is proportional to the intensity of the external magnetic field—it is possible to determine the magnetic field strength by measuring the precession frequency.

Based on the obtained results and detected magnetic anomalies, the position and size of objects lying on the seabed—or even buried within the sediment layer—can be accurately determined.

UNDERWATER SURVEYS WITH A MAGNETOMETER

When carrying out underwater surveys using a magnetometer, I prepare graphic maps for the client, showing the measured values of the magnetic field intensity.
Unlike sonar, the data obtained do not allow for the determination of the exact shape or dimensions of submerged objects.
Therefore, I offer a comprehensive underwater survey service combining sonar imaging, magnetometer measurements, and underwater identification using a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) or diver inspection.
